You thought when you turned your television off it was really off, right? Guess again, your television goes into stand by mode and isn’t really shut off at all. All day while your at work or out for play your television is drawing power, which in turn is costing you money. The experts say that 75% of the energy we consume from electronic products are actually turned off. That means your paying for something your not even using 3/4 of the day, scary huh. The average desktop computer, not including the monitor, consumes from 60 to 250 watts a day. Compared with a machine left on 24/7, a computer that is in use four hours a day and turned off the rest of the time would save you about $70 a year. The carbon impact would be even greater. Shutting it off would reduce the machine’s CO2 emissions 83%, to just 63 kg a year.
The solution is the Smart Strip. This surge protector / energy saver is the answer to all those dollar bills just burning up right there in your living room. The easy to set up device works by designating one outlet as the “Control” outlet (where you might plug in your PC power cord or TV). Whenever the electronic device that is plugged into that outlet is turned off, the power strip will turn off and cut off power to any peripherals (such as a monitor, printer, speakers, and scanner with a PC, or a VCR, DVD player, and video game system with a TV). Priced moderately at a range from 35 USD to 75 USD the Smart Strip is a great investment in the fight to go green and save a little green in your pocket as well.
