As we look at the future of fuel there are so many options being explored. One lately has stood out and thats the controversy of the use of a foodstuff for a fuel. Food prices are on the rise. According to the U.S. Department of Labor prices have increased over seven percent in just the last twelve months.
A lot of this is to blame on the crop produced fuels like ethanol. The losses are showing up in the livestock industry and flowing right up to us. Feed lot losses are over $200 a head on cattle and up to $37 per head for hogs. Over 70% of the feed finishing formulas are made up of corn. The strain of ethanol has decreased the supplies for feeding livestock and has reduced the number of cattle and hogs on feed. Where theres increases in pricing at the bottom there will be at the top, right?
To me it seems that using a valuable feedstuff like corn is not the answer for fuel, not only is not becoming a cost effective method, but it is putting a strain on our food supply and pocket book. There are so many other options to be explored that can make our lives cleaner and that are so much cheaper if we just take the time and energy to find the answers.
